The Minister of Transport, Senator. Idris Umar, said that the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, would be upgraded to award degrees.
Umar made the
statement at the 2013 World Maritime Day Celebration in Calabar. The theme of
the event is: “Sustainable Development, IMO’s Contribution Beyond Rio+20".
He said that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was expected to be signed soon with the World Maritime University, Maimo in Sweden.
According to him, the
Federal Government is also addressing the challenges of berthing facilities in
the academy.
“Government is also
addressing the challenges of berthing facilities for Nautical Science and
Marine Engineering Cadets for their mandatory sea time to enable them obtain
various classes of certificates of competency.’’
The minister said
that Nigeria had appointed the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety
Agency (NIMASA) , the designate authority to coordinate the implementation of
the International Ship and Port Security Code (ISPS Code).
Umar, who was
represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Nebeolisa Emordi,
said that NIMASA and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) were working jointly to
ensure security at Nigerian ports.
