Man killed 65-year-old woman over cassava theft

Victim
A 30-year-old man, Mr. Augustine Akpan, from Osuk Ntan village in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has killed a 65-year-old woman, Mrs. Iquo  Akpan, to death. It was learnt that Augustine sister, Ms Ani Akpan, stole cassava from Iquo farm.
The incident was said to have been reported to the village council, who arrested Ani with the police.
It was gathered that Ani’s brother, Augustine became furious following the detention of his sister by the police.

One of the youth leaders in the village, Mr. Enek, Udo told our correspondent in Ibiono on Thursday that Augustine accused Iquo of masterminding the arrest of his sister.
He stated that on Sunday, Augustine went to Iquo’s resident and dealt several machete blows on her, leading to the woman’s death.
He said, “The woman (Ani) was handed over to the police by the village council after Iquo’s children reported that Ani went to her mother farm to steal some cassava.
“The woman did not go there by herself. She did not go to any police station to effect the arrest of Ani.
“Augustine’s reason for killing the woman was that Iquo was the one who went to the village council to report the matter as well as arrange for the police to arrest his sister.”
An eyewitness, Ms Ini Ekong, said Ani was handed over to the police by the village council for justice.
