Obioma Imoke receives JETS innovative Award

The Cross River State chapter of the Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists (JETS) has honoured the Founder/Board Chair of Partnership Opportunities for Women Empowerment Realization (POWER), Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke with a life-time Award for her contributions in boosting
science education in the state.
The Award was presented at this year’s Annual JETS Conference with the theme, ‘Technological & Scientific Innovation: the Place of Women and Youth in Cross River State’.
Receiving the Award, Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke thanked the team for honoring her with the ‘Innovation Prestigious Award’ and pledged to do more in pursuance of technological education in the state.
Mrs. Liyel-Imoke, who was represented by the Executive Director, POWER, Mrs. Tammie Kammonke said she has passion for qualitative and practical education which necessitated her establishment of the Surefoot International School in Calabar to provide a platform for setting excellent standards in learning as well as provide conducive environment for young people to discover their purpose in life.
Congratulating the state JETS for their excellent performance in national and global competitions, which, she says signals a bright future for the state, she called on stakeholders to join hands in according Nigerian children the best opportunities in life.
The State Commissioner for Education, Professor Offiong E. Offiong who was honoured alongside the Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Liyel-Imoke, acknowledged with joy government’s efforts in education which is yielding positive results. He disclosed that the state was placed sixth position in the 2013 West African Examination Council (WAEC) results in the country while it emerged seventh in last year’s examination.
Advising JETS students to keep trying their best, Prof. Offiong said youths need proper mentoring to enable them effectively harness their enormous potentials, emphasizing that to be a successful scientist,
engineer and technician requires hard work and creative thinking.
The State Coordinator of JETS and Executive Secretary, Technician Education Board, Calabar, Rev. (Mrs.) Margaret Ene-Ita remarked that the present administration has repositioned science and technology education in the state through the building of science laboratories and workshops as well as the renovation of schools and recruitment of science and technical teachers.
Rev. Mrs. Ene-Ita said the state JETS team is one of the best within and outside the country, adding that the state has won Gold, Silver and Bronze laurels at different competitions in Nigeria, India, China, America, among others.
In a lecture titled, “Educational Policies: a Set-back in Women and Youth’s Involvement in Scientific and Technological Innovation”, the guest lecturer, Dr. (Mrs.) Eke V. Ikpeme pointed out that the awareness for science and technology among girls boosted the ratio of boys/girls studying science subjects to 3:2 and identified the setback in science & technical education to include lack of equipment in technical schools, continuity, sustainability and inadequate trained personnel.
Another guest lecturer, Dr. Udensi Ugorji who spoke on the topic: Functional Education System – Sine Qua Non for Scientific and Technological, called for a total overhaul of Educational policies in
the country, adding that Cross River is a good environment to work.
